What is the NSC Examination?

  • Commonly called “matric,” the NSC exam is the final Grade 12 examination, marking the end of formal school education.
  • It is a crucial measure of the education system’s performance.

Key Details of the NSC Examination

When is it written?

  • Annually from October to December.

Registration

  • Learners must register before 15 March of the exam year for all subjects.
  • Also applies to those part-time or retaking subjects.

Eligibility

  • Current Grade 12 learners.
  • Past candidates who want to improve results (if still registered as NSC).

Minimum Requirements to Pass

  • Achieve 40% in 3 subjects (one must be a Home Language).
  • Achieve 30% in 3 other subjects.
  • Complete all School-Based Assessments (SBA).

What if I Fail the NSC Exam?

  • Supplementary Exams in Feb/March have been phased out.
  • Candidates can now register for the June NSC examination to improve results.

Remarking & Rechecking

  • You can apply for your scripts to be remarked or rechecked within 14 days of receiving your results.
  • Application forms are available at schools, exam centers, or district offices.

Withheld Results

  • Usually due to irregularities.
  • Candidates can appeal and should enquire in writing or through their school/district office.

Senior Certificate (Amended) – For Adults

  • Available for adults 21 years and older.
  • Based on current CAPS curriculum.

Higher Education Admission Requirements

Higher Certificate30% in the language of instruction. Other subjects may be required by institutions.
Diploma30% in language of instruction + 40% in 4 other recognized subjects. Additional requirements may apply.
Bachelor’s Degree30% in language of instruction + 50% in 4 other recognized subjects. Additional requirements may apply.
